Five Things to Know About Katie, Our April 28, 2017 #FarmingFridays Feature
#FarmingFridays, AKA the most wonderful day of the week, is back! Through this social series, we invite members of the agricultural community to share their stories through photos and videos that give our guests a peek into a day in their lives.
When she’s not spending time with her kids or helping on the farm, you can find her being a pen pal to Chicago schools or hosting farm tours for fifth graders.
Here are five things to know about Katie:
1. Katie grew up on a family farm down the road from where she currently lives with her husband, Andy, a seventh-generation farmer whom she lovingly refers to as “My Farmer,” and their two children, Ethan and Natalie. Together, she and her husband pass along their knowledge of farming, such as how to check crops in the spring. In the photo below, Ethan and Natalie check to see if the seedlings are poking above the surface to make sure the crop is on the way.
2. She’s passionate about teaching people—especially kids—about agriculture. Katie is an agricultural literacy coordinator, so she’s often in the classroom talking to students and teachers about the connection between food and farming.
3. For many years, Katie’s mom was a pen pal with students in the Chicago area. A few years ago, Katie’s mom passed the pen to Katie who now participates in the Adopt a Classroom program through the Illinois Farm Bureau. She often writes letters to kindergarten and second grade classes, and she hosts the kids at her farm for a day full of hayrides, learning and exploring. For many kids, this is their first time on a farm.
4. In 2006, Katie got together with Ag in the Classroom, Lee County Farm Bureau, University of Illinois Extension-Lee County, and the Lee County Soil & Water Conservation District to plan a yearly event where 375 fifth graders could spend a day fully immersed in farming and learn about agricultural careers.
It takes more than 50 volunteers to pull off this day-long Ag Expo that offers 16 to 17 workshops at the Lee County 4-H Center and Fairgrounds. This year, Culver’s of Dixon is the opening presenter and will talk about our restaurants’ connection to farming and, of course, provide some delicious Fresh Frozen Custard.
To date, this event has provided learning for more than 3,500 area fifth graders.
5. Growing up, Katie always wanted to share both her story and stories about agriculture in general. She loves to write and is looking forward to providing one more perspective on farming that people can relate to and think about when they’re in a restaurant or at the grocery store.
