Every year, the Black Hawk County Courthouse in Waterloo, IA holds an event where multiple adoptions become finalized. The heartwarming new family milestone is held near Thanksgiving and National Adoption Day and culminates in festivities with food and gifts for the new families.
In fact, the chief judge of the courthouse requires that all families celebrate with ice cream after the proceedings.
This year, though, the celebration was in jeopardy of being cancelled because of a lack of funding.
Franchisee Jake Kendall, owner of the Cedar Falls and Waterloo restaurants, learned about the judge’s ice cream rule and the funding issue and decided to help by serving free scoops of Fresh Frozen Custard to the new families.
“It’s a pretty emotional experience,” said Jake. “We’re seeing lots of smiles, all the way from the kids to the adults. You can feel the energy in the room.”
Culver Franchising System, LLC also donated more than $2,000 worth of Culver’s gift certificates so the families could enjoy a warm meal together. In total, 23 children were adopted and thanks to the support from the restaurant, as well as several other area businesses and law firms, the families’ first day together was made extra special.
